Understand the people...

“ I Used to be the common man, so i know what the common man wants. Then I sell it to him”

When i read my life in advertising, it made me look at marketing in a new way…

I feel like a lot of times, marketers make simple things too complex….

We use big words, crazy mechanisms, and complicated ideas…

When in all reality, it’s the simple things that have the most selling power.

People are very practical.

They want thing that work

They want things that are at a good price

And they want things that help them in some way.

Thats it.

And after being around people in tech and have been in corportae environments, it’s easy to see their disconnect from the average person…

I’ve been broke before.

There’s been times when my lights were cut off at home…

And i know what it’s like to not have much, and the thought process of trying to make money stretch…

So it gives me an edge.

I can relate to the average person, therefore i can speak to them

I can explain their pains and experiences in ways that can only happen if you’ve experienced it.

Which is why im running circles around the more “corporate” guys.

They dont truly understand their customer.

And that principle can destroy a business overnight.

I’ll leave you with this:

Before you create a new campaign….

Before you write a single letter of copy…

Pretend to be your customer for a week.

Buy their clothes.

Watch their TV shows.

Act like them (look up method acting)

And really get an idea of being that person…

Because the clearer idea you have of your audience, the better the results will be.
